Community Composting

On January 23rd 2024, This event took place in the National Garden in Singapore. We decided to volunteer for composting to learn how food waste and plants could be transformed into soil for the garden. Additionally, we sought information from the National Environment Agency (NEA) staff about the Miyawaki system and inquired about different types of native trees available in Singapore. Composting in Singapore follows a step-by-step process: First, residents, volunteers and staff separate organic waste at the source. Collected organic waste is then transported to centralized composting facilities. The facilities utilize aerobic composting, where microorganisms break down the organic matter with controlled temperature, moisture, and aeration. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority oversees the process, ensuring quality control. Once the composting is complete, the nutrient-rich compost undergoes checks for safety and is distributed for various applications, closing the waste management loop. Public awareness campaigns and education initiatives actively promote participation in composting, aligning with Singapore's commitment to sustainable waste management practices.
